The Webster definition of the word “yammer” – to whine or complain.
We have all done it. Whining and complaining. I am proposing that this habit is as nasty as smoking three packs a day or drinking a six pack a night! Yammering helps no one. Yammering fixes nothing. It can easily deteriorate into destructive gossip. It is a cousin to sarcasm and self-pity, and nothing good comes from it. This is a two-headed monster; it includes a talking head and a listening head.
How do you feel after 20 minutes of yammering? Energized, joyful, inspired, ready to help and go to work? NOT!! Describe the characteristics of a yammering team. Industrious, service oriented, efficient, cooperative? I jest!! I don’t want to be guilty of yammering about yammering, so I’ll move on!!!
What is the cure for yammering? Here are four keys to killing yammer…
First: Recognize that yammering is a useless and destructive habit.
Second: Take appropriate action to address the source of the yammer. Just as anger, worry, and aggravation are signals that something needs to change, yammering may be precipitated from situations that need to be addressed. A key to silencing yammering is to become solution oriented. To break the yammer, determine what action needs to take place to address the complaint, and then take it! If nothing can be done, then quit yammering and get back to work!
Third: Replace yammer with gratitude. Whining and complaining will wither and die in a culture of gratitude. Count your blessings. Your brain is a programmable bio-computer. You are the programmer! When you shift your attention from whining and complaining to gratitude, your mind goes to work to find all of the good things in your life. What you seek you will find. As you consistently practice gratitude, it becomes a wonderful habit that replaces yammering. Thankful thoughts produce joy, contentment, satisfaction, and appreciation. Such positive emotions engender efficiency, teamwork, and production!
Fourth: Establish a culture of no yammering. Set the example. Refuse to talk or listen to yammer. If you are the team leader, propose a no yammering rule of the game and challenge everyone to participate!
So quit yammering, take action, solve problems, and fill your mind with gratitude.
