The Pursuit of Comfort

Honey, have a cookie.  You’ll feel better.  I just need to get in my lazy boy recliner and zone out.  Life is so hard!  Oh no, another problem!  I hate change.  Why do these things always happen to me?  Pass me the second bowl of chocolate ice cream and the remote.  I just want to be pain free.  Hopefully in another year I can retire and take it easy.

The pursuit of comfort.  Is that really what you want?  Will living a life free of challenges really bring you happiness?  I implore you to take a closer look at your dream of nirvana.  Human beings are designed to breathe, to move, to fight, to strive, to grow, to stretch, to rise and meet opposition and overcome.  It is the pursuit of victory, the completion of a difficult goal, the significance of the sacrifice to make a difference for others, the finishing of a project after the relentless application of effort and hard work, the joy of overcoming and embracing diversity to build a winning team, such activities bring true satisfaction and joy.  Pleasure road does not always lead to happiness.  In fact, when pain free pleasure and the pursuit of soft comfort becomes the goal, true life becomes dull and undefined.  The law of entropy takes over.

Sleep is best enjoyed after a day of labor.  Food is most appreciated when you are hungry.  A cold drink satisfies most after being in the hot sun.  A long, cold winter produces a greater appreciation for spring.

My message is simple.  Quit defining your happiness in terms of pleasure.  Enjoy the pursuit and challenges of life.  Choose to be happy in discomfort.  Work six full days and then rest one.  Let comfort and pleasure be the dessert and not the main course.  Such a life will taste much better!
