The Fear of Failure

Dave Beam

When I am coaching folks, I often ask them “Why don’t you go for it?”  Here’s how they often respond:

“I’m afraid I will fail”; “What will people think?”; “I would be so embarrassed if I messed up”; “I couldn’t handle it if it didn’t work out”

These thoughts of failure are rooted in unvalidated expectation.  Here is the more likely outcome; If doesn’t work out the way I planned, I will adjust and move on.  I will have another learning experience in life, and will be a bit stronger, wiser, and certainly more mature.  And who knows, it might even work out and exceed my expectations!

However, one thing is certain.  If you don’t go for it, you are choosing to forgo an opportunity for a new possibility, learning and growth, and you will not accomplish anything.  The only true failure is the failure to act.  If you don’t go for it, you learn nothing and will likely face regret and wonder what might have been.

So, if you are ready to cast your fear aside and go for it, consider this approach:  Whatever the dream, the possibility, or the opportunity; take a closer look and then create a small action step that will move you in the direction of the desired outcome, and take that step.  At that moment, you break the paralysis of fear and indecision and will be on your way!

Something fresh and new, even if small, is better than stale and boring.  Today, choose to leave your indecision and worry and get into action.  Go for it. Drop the story of failure and start enjoying a new adventure.
