Leadership is influence. Effective leaders have willing followers. True loyalty from the heart cannot be mandated, it is inspired.
Question: Are people more likely to follow a joyful person or a depressed person? It is apparent that most people would rather follow a joyful, optimistic, cheerful, bright, energetic person; someone with a sense of humor that does not take themselves too seriously. Would others call you joyful or depressed?
Some people are afraid of fun, lightness and joy. They contend that we must take our responsibility and mission seriously. I agree. However, sobriety does not have to exclude fun, joy, and optimism. A competent leader full of joy and optimism will have the greatest influence. Negative, sad, pessimistic people are not attractive. I’m not promoting foolish silliness and shallow ignorance, but a confident upbeat joyful leadership.
I propose that the most effective leaders demonstrate heart-felt, thoughtful optimism, anchored in a robust grit of resolve and purpose. This is no goofy party. Effective leaders exude a deep-rooted joy of purpose and service that inspires others to follow them into the battle and persevere through tough times to victory.
Take a moment right now and consider how you might seriously demonstrate joyful service to those your serve today.
