Are You Listening?

“Dave, if they would just listen and follow the system, everything would run smoothly. I don’t understand why they won’t listen to me. Their behavior makes no sense!” I asked a few questions and let Joe talk. As he shared more, I acknowledged his frustration and began to see the situation through his eyes. Then he said, “Dave, if my people would listen to me the way you listen, that would be amazing. Can you get them to do that?”
I replied, “Joe, are you listening to me right now?” “Yes! I’m listening. Please help me. I’m all ears!” “Let me ask you one more question, Joe.” I paused. “What have I been doing that has moved you into this place of focus and willingness to listen?”
Joe thought for a moment, then smiled. “You asked questions and listened until you really understood my situation. You were patient, and you seemed to feel my frustration. You haven’t given me many answers yet, but I can tell you care and genuinely want to help.”
I nodded. “I do want to help—and I appreciate your attention. Now think about what you just said. What might YOU begin doing with your employees if you want them to listen to you?”
And here’s a question for you: Who must YOU be for people to truly listen and understand you?
