Strong Leaders Speak Clearly

Fearless, unambiguous speech is rare these days.  It seems that the goal of most so-called leaders is to keep everyone comfortable and happy.  That is a recipe for confusion and mediocrity.  Strong leaders communicate directly and truthfully rather than sugarcoating their words to make others feel comfortable.

The distinction between “Serving” and “Pleasing” is critical.  The goal of serving is to provide what is best for the team and fulfilling the mission.  The goal of pleasing is to provide what feels good and comfortable to everyone.   An effective leader serves the team by calling them to engage with challenges that are not comfortable.  All growth occurs outside the comfort zone.

Here is the leadership challenge.  Are you willing speak the truth in kindness, to stir the pot, rattle the cage, and care enough to confront mediocrity and status quo performance?  The truth must never be shrouded in a veil of social pleasing.  Effective communication entails delivering uncompromised truth in a respectful and clear manner.
