I’m just a people pleaser! He has always been impatient. She is just a sensitive person. It’s just her personality. I’m not a people person. I’m not real motivated. I just can’t see me being ___________.
Do you believe that personality is fixed? Most people do. They think thoughts like “Once an impatient person, always an impatient person.” We could debate for hours about the genetic influence on a person’s behavior and demeanor in life. We could also talk about nature vs nurture, and how our parents and teachers and peers have influenced and made us who we are today. No doubt all that affects us and influences who we are. But are you destined to be only the sum of your past, genetics, and environment?
I want to challenge you with an interesting question: What if it is possible to re-invent yourself to be whoever you choose to be? What if “personality” (whatever that really is) is just a set of habits? What if you clearly identified and described an ideal personality, and then started to act in compliance with that description – today?
In the world of coaching and helping people transform their businesses and lives, understanding and practicing reinvention is powerful and essential. When a person realizes that they can change, they are set free from the prison of their “personality”. They realize that if there is something about their “personality” that they don’t like, or just something that they want change about themselves for fun, they can do it.
Here’s a simple question. What would you love to do, or what would you love to have, and who would you need to be to do and have those things? You can shift your identity right now. It begins with a simple commitment followed by practicing being that “new” person. Define today who you want to BE. It is a fun and fulfilling way to live. It is also risky, and often uncomfortable. And it is living life to the fullest. Go for it!
