The Weariness of Partial Commitment

We’ve all been there. You might be there right now. Someone asks if you are committed to something, and you reply, “I am not fully committed, but I’m working on it” or “I’m 99% in”.

This is a tiring place to be. You have an intention. You have a desire. But you are not fully convinced. You want something to be different. You are interested in going for it, BUT…………..

You have some concerns, or a competing value, or you are a still reluctant, or you don’t know what to do. ________ might have a problem with you if you did it, or you could fail again like before, or ……………. The list of reasons and excuses go on and on. So in your head you are tossed back and forth, in and out, up and down, sure/not-sure, maybe I’ll try it, or just give up! It is these mental gymnastics and wavering that create the stress and weariness.

So what to do? First, accept that commitment by definition is only 100%, and no less. Once committed, there is no turning back, no way out, and you are absolutely going to do it. You are on the diving board, and you jump. You are at the gym, and you pay them non-refundable cash for a full year membership. You are with your coach and hand him payment in full for your 6 month program.

Please realize there is a space in your brain called the committed place. It is a place of absolutes and no compromise. Doubt and fear are banned. It is a peaceful place of choice, of ownership, of action, and of integrity. It is a place where procrastination, overwhelm, instability, and wavering cease to exist. You won’t find waffles and whine on the menu in the committed place!

The great news is that you can take any intention, grab it by the hand, and take it into that room. It is a simple choice; YES or NO. IN or OUT. I WILL ACT or I WILL NOT ACT, I WILL DO IT or I WON’T DO IT. You know that you are there when you have taken that first action step and begin tracking the results. There are no longer options, excuses, confusion, and no need to decide. The choice has been made. The committed place is always in the present, never in the past and never in the future. There are no more wispy dreams and hopes in this place, only real action. It is the action world.

You hold the key to unlock the door to this place. It is the key of CHOICE. Simply choose and take the first step, and you are there.

So I leave you with your key of choice, and with a beautiful, harsh fact. If your “commitment” is not 100%, it is not commitment. You have an intention surrounded by indecision, doubts, procrastination, worry, guilt, and sometimes terrible fear of failure. The good news is that you can grab that intention and take it into the committed place. Immediately the war in your brain will cease, and the only thing left will be to act and enjoy learning from the results!
